MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is a multi-platform emulator for arcade games, home computers, gaming consoles, chess computers, calculators, etc. MAME 0.162 (released on May 27, 2015) merged the previously separate MAME and MESS (Multi Emulator Super System) projects into one, so that a single executable now combines the emulation capabilities of pre-0.162 MAME/MESS.

The most important goal of MAME is highly accurate emulation, not speed. MAME is mainly a preservation project that aims to reproduce the behaviour of the real hardware perfectly, so CPU usage may be slightly higher than many dedicated CPC emulators.

Emulated systems
Currently, over a thousand systems are supported by MAME, including the CPC and CPC Plus ranges and the GX4000. This is probably the main reason for using MAME: A single download is enough to emulate more or less every home computer and gaming console that ever existed in the late 1970s and 1980s—provided one can find a ROM set that works (see below).

MAME does not have the depth of other CPC emulators, but it sure has enormous breadth. Its flexible input mapping and pixel shader effects make MAME particularly suited for gaming.

Installation
MAME runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD. You can get Windows binaries from mamedev.org.

On OS X, you can install MAME via Homebrew:
brew install mame

On Windows and OS X, the MAME binary is called mame, on Linux sdlmame. On some Linux distros such as Arch Linux you have to use absolute paths for disk images or ROMs because /usr/bin/sdlmame is a wrapper script that will cd to the directory with the MAME binary. Or you could simply skip the wrapper script and run /usr/share/sdlmame/sdlmame directly:
alias mame=/usr/share/sdlmame/sdlmame

Starting MAME; command line arguments; MAME menu; quitting
First get the and unzip them into the MAME roms folder.

Typical command line to start MAME in CPC mode (windowed mode and with a disc inserted in drive A):
mame cpc6128 -skip_gameinfo -window -flop1 disk.dsk

Supported CPC models are cpc464, cpc464p, cpc664, cpc6128, cpc6128p, gx4000, cpc6128f (French), cpc6128s (Swedish), and the clones kccomp (KC Compact) and al520ex (Aleste 520EX; hold Shift during boot to go to Basic).

Press Scroll Lock to toggle partial keyboard emulation mode. Now you can use P to pause MAME, Tab to enter the MAME menu, and Escape to quit MAME. Alt-Return toggles fullscreen mode. (See also default keys.)

You can use the "-ab" commandline option to type text into MAME, e.g.
mame cpc6128 -flop1 disk.dsk -ab "run\"disc\n"
will boot the disc.

| -cart
|.cpr; .bin (Plus series and GX4000 only)
|}

Supported file types can also be shown with the "-listmedia" command line option.

You can use zipped disk images too. If there is more than one DSK image in the zip file, treat the zip file like a directory, e.g.
mame cpc6128 -flop1 disk.zip/disk0.dsk

Python script to start MAME in CPC mode
On Linux, you can also set your file manager (e.g. Nautilus or Konqueror) to open .dsk files with the following Python script:

#!/usr/bin/env python

# Call as
# "cpc" : emulated keyboard
# "cpcn" : natural

import os, os.path, zipfile
from sys import argv

if 'cpcn' in argv[0]:
nat = '-natural'
else:
nat =

s = "/usr/share/sdlmame/sdlmame cpc6128 -skip_gameinfo -window %s -keymap -keymap_file /usr/share/sdlmame/keymaps/km_de_LINUX.map" % nat

def checkzip(t):
"Check if file is a ZIP file; use the first file in the archive"
if t[-4:].lower() == '.zip':
a = zipfile.ZipFile(t).namelist()
t = os.path.join(t, a[0])
return t

if len(argv) > 1:
for x in range(1, len(argv)):
s += ' -flop%u "%s"' % (x, checkzip(argv[x]))
os.system(s)

This script should open a MAME window with the disc inserted in drive A. (Note that this also selects the German keymap.) You can also use this to open ZIP files containing disc images, e.g. "cpc mydisc.zip" will try to insert the first file in the ZIP archive.

GUI front-ends
Several GUI front-ends for MAME/MESS exist for Windows, Linux, and OS X:

*MAMEUI64 (Windows)
*QMC2 (Windows, OS X, Linux)

Keyboard layouts
MAME supports two keyboard modes:
* emulated (the default; keys are assigned based on key position on the emulated hardware)
* natural (command line option "-natural"; based on the character generated by a key, e.g. pressing "z" will always generate a "z" on the emulated system)

To use a German keyboard in emulated keyboard mode, start MAME e.g. with (key map path on Linux):
mame cpc6128 -keymap -keymap_file /usr/share/sdlmame/keymaps/km_de_LINUX.map

You can also put these settings in your mame.ini like this:
keymap 1
keymap_file /usr/share/sdlmame/keymaps/km_de_LINUX.map

In emulated mode, keys can also be remapped in the emulator menu. First press Scroll Lock to enable the MAME control keys, then Tab to open the menu, and finally select Input (this system). Return, Esc clears an assigned key.

Note that the Delete and Backspace keys are swapped on the emulated keyboard because of the CPC keyboard layout. So you may want to reassign those. Escape on the CPC is mapped to the key left of "1" on the PC keyboard. Alt-Enter switches between windowed and full screen mode.

CPC artwork
You can add optional bezel artwork to MAME to simulate a CPC monitor:
* (CPC6128/GT65 bezel)

Rename this file to cpc6128.zip and put it in MAME's artwork folder (~/.mame/artwork/ on Linux).

ROMs and extension hardware
. Just unzip the file and move the ZIPs inside into the MAME ROM folder.

General notes about MAME and ROMs
Some MAME ROMs have parent ROMs that also need to be installed. E.g., cpc6128.zip also requires cpc464.zip to run. (See the links section for CPC ROM files for MAME.)

ROMs often only work with a specific version of MAME. This does not seem to affect CPC ROMs, but other systems sometimes give an error message when ROM filenames or checksums do not match what MAME expected.

Slot options (extension hardware)
mame cpc6128 -lslot

Loading external ROMs
The ROM Box expansion can be used to load external ROMs such as MAXAM:

mame cpc6128 -exp rom -rom1 /path/to/MAXAM.ROM

Up to 8 external ROMs (-rom1 to -rom8) are supported this way.

Dobbertin Harddisc
From the forum post:

To use, add -exp hd20 to the commandline, which will also allow you to add -hard <filename>.
Code:

mame cpc6128 -exp hd20 -hard1 disk.chd

Only MAME CHDs are supported, you can create a blank hard disk image using chdman. Geometry is 615/4/17.
Code:

chdman createhd -o disk.chd -c none -chs 615,4,17

(-c none means no compression, but this is required for MAME to write directly to the CHD image. If you use compression, then data writes will be written to a separate file)

You can use X-DDOS 2.00 or 2.10 by using -exp hd20,bios=xddos200 or -exp hd20,bios=xddos210. v2.10 is the default.

See http://mahlemiut.marpirc.net/cpc_hd20.avi, a quick demo loading a game from HD.

CRT simulation
MAME can use shaders to simulate typical CRT graphics artifacts such as scanlines, colors bleeding into each other, jitter, and display curvature.

BGFX
The easiest way to do this (works on Windows, OS X, and Linux) since MAME 0.172 is to enable BGFX video output: Put this in your mame.ini:

video bgfx
bgfx_screen_chains hlsl

(You may also have to set bgfx_path to the bgfx directory if MAME cannot find the shaders.)

Check with F11 if you still get 100% performance. If not, adjust frame skip with F8/F9.

Also, if you press the tilde (~) and then cursor up/down, you can adjust the shader settings (they are also under Slider Controls in the MAME menu). These are not saved at the moment though.

If you edit bgfx/chains/hlsl.json in a text editor, you can change the default values. E.g., to reduce the Moiré pattern, search for "Shadow Mask Amount" and change it to:

"default": 0.20

HLSL and GLSL
Older methods for CRT simulation are manual HLSL and GLSL configurations, here are some examples:
*Windows (using HLSL shaders)
**A scripted setup with separate "1980s" and "1990s" CRT configs: (huge post is halfway down the page)
**A German shader tutorial:
*Linux (using GLSL shaders): MAME tutorial

Remaining issues with CPC emulation
*MAME may fail to read DSK images with certain kinds of copy protection. Speedlock seems to work fine though.
*MAME cannot write to disc images in DSK format; only MFI (MESS floppy image) and MFM (HxCFloppyEmulator floppy image) are supported for writing.
*Some demo tricks may be broken in MAME, e.g. overscan pictures are horizontally misaligned (i.e., shifted to the right).
*CPC+/GX4000 emulation still has some obvious graphics glitches.
*The emulated CPC464 has the AMSDOS ROM loaded which is a problem with early 464-only programs that rely on the 464's larger free memory.

Compiling to JavaScript
Since MAME 0.168 (released in November 2015), MAME can compile to JavaScript using Emscripten's emmake command. JSMESS is therefore no longer necessary to compile e.g. the MAME/MESS CPC emulator for web browsers.

Introduction to the Plus range
<gallery align="right">
image:6128plus_es.jpg|Spanish Amstrad 6128 Plus
image:6128plus_fr_en_kanga.jpg|Custom Airbrushed 6128 Plus
</gallery>

In 1990 Amstrad introduced the "Plus" range which tweaked the hardware in many ways and added a cartridge slot to all models. The Plus included the 464 Plus, 6128 Plus and the GX4000 video game console (which is a cut down Plus without the keyboard nor support for non-cartridge media). All of the range included a cartridge slot and additional hardware improvements.

Most improvements were to the video display which saw an increase in palette to 4096 colours and gained the capability of hardware sprites. Splitting the display into two separate windows and pixel scrolling both became full supported hardware features although both were possible on the non-"Plus" hardware using clever programming of the existing Motorola 6845. An automatic DMA transfer system for feeding the sound chip was also added but the sound chip itself remained unchanged. Additionally, the BASIC command set for disc access was improved.

These models did not do very well in the marketplace, failing to attract any substantial third party support. The 8-bit technology behind the Plus was starting to look a little out of date by 1990 and users resented the substantial price hike for cartridge games compared to their tape and disc counterparts. However, the Plus machines did sell well in France where Amstrad still had a large following due to the success of the classic CPC range there.

The range was officially titled as 'Amstrad 464 Plus', 'Amstrad 6128 Plus' and 'GX4000' and the 'CPC' (standing for Colour Personal Computer) abbreviation used in the older generation was dropped. However, many Amstrad users refer to the Plus range as 'CPC Plus' or 'CPC+' due to the inherent similarities of the two ranges.
The GX4000 Games Console
<gallery align="right">
Image:Gx4000.jpg|Amstrad GX4000
Image:Amstrad-GX4000-Console-Set.jpg|Amstrad GX4000
</gallery>

The GX4000 is a game console based on a 6128 Plus without a floppy controller or keyboard (although it is actually possible to modify one, add a floppy controller and a keyboard and use it as a Plus). It was delivered with two game paddles (as the ones delivered with the Plus models) and Burnin' Rubber on cartridge (without BASIC).

The GX4000 was Amstrad's attempt to gain some share in the home game console market, then dominated by the likes of Nintendo and Sega. Like others before it, and like others after it, it failed abysmally in its goal. Despite the fact that the hardware was decent (after all the CPC+ series were some of the very best 8-bit computers ever designed), it was a case of 'too little, too late'. Lack of CPC+ specific software, lack of marketing effort and bad timing meant that Amstrad's adventure in the home market was about to end.

GX4000 differences compared to 464 or 6128 Plus
* The master clock is 39.9Mhz (approx) instead of 40Mhz for the 464/6128 Plus. The Arnold V specification indicates this is to give a better picture. This means the GX4000 is 0.25% slower than a 464 or 6128 Plus but should have a better picture.

* The pause button on the GX4000 is mapped to the P button on the CPC keyboard. Other than this the 2 digital joysticks are connected, all other keys are not connected.

* There is a difference in the wiring schematics on the ADC inputs where the ASIC senses the computer configuration.

* The following are not connected on GX4000 so the associated inputs are not defined (possibly high):
* Printer (data and strobe)
* Keyboard lines 0,1,2,4,5,7,8
* FDC
* FDD motor
* Cassette read, write, motor
* The signals /ROMEN, ROMDIS, /RAMRD, RAMDIS, CRTC CURSOR, EXP, Printer BUSY

* When a system cartridge is inserted (this has been verified with a yellow and a green labelled system cartridge), the copyright message and a Ready prompt is displayed. If the fire buttons or directions are pressed on the first digital joystick you see X,Z and the arrows displayed, the same as if you had pressed these buttons on a 464/6128 Plus or CPC. Pressing Pause displays "P".

Accessing the Plus hardware improvements
The Plus and GX4000 cartridges access the Plus hardware improvements, but specific software can be created using the extra features without the need of cartridge hardware (contrary as it was claimed by Amstrad in 1991). The extra features are not locked by a hardware mechanism but only by a special 17 bytes-length sequence send to the CRTC. So, it's possible for everyone to create his/her own software on the Plus, using the extra features available through a ASIC I/O page. Except the extra-features, the 464 and 6128 Plus machines are almost fully compatible with the classic CPC generation. Some minor differences are noticeable in the components (PPI, CRTC, Gate Array) contained in the ASIC and in the interrupt mechanism in vectorised mode.

For details about the Plus/GX4000 hardware features, see Arnold V Specs Revised.
A guide to running software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ computer

Restarting an Amstrad CPC to load a cassette or disc software
Amstrad CPC464, CPC664, CPC472 or CPC6128
* Switch off the computer and switch it on again.
The computer will show the startup message and there will be a “Ready” prompt.

You can now follow the instructions to use cassette or disc software.

Amstrad CPC+
# Switch the computer off.
# Insert the system cartridge (which contains the game “Burnin' Rubber” and “Locomotive BASIC”).
# Switch on the computer.
A menu will then be displayed with two options “f1 Amstrad BASIC” and “f2 Burnin Rubber”.

# Press f1 to select “Amstrad BASIC”.
# The screen will clear and then display:

BASIC 1.1
Ready

You can now follow the instructions to use the cassette or disc software.

Loading cassette software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ system
# Restart the computer.
# Insert the cassette into the cassette player.
Note: On a CPC464 or CPC464+ system you must insert the cassette into the internal cassette player.

If you are using a CPC with a disc interface you will need to type
|TAPE
and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Note:
* The
|
symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and “@” (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.
* The CPC664, CPC6128 and CPC6128+ have a disc interface built-in, and this command must be used to enter cassette mode.
* The CPC464 and CPC464+ have a cassette player built in. If you have a disc interface (Amstrad/Schneider DDI-1 or Vortex) connected you will need to type this command to enter cassette mode. If you do not have a disc interface, you do not need to type this command.

Now type
RUN"
and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Tips:
* On a CPC464 system you can press SHIFT and the small ENTER key (on the keypad) together instead of typing
RUN"
.
* On a CPC464+, CPC6128, or CPC6128+ system you can press SHIFT and ENTER together instead of typing
RUN"
.

The message
Press PLAY then any key:
will be displayed.

# Press the PLAY button on the cassette player.
# Press any key on the Amstrad keyboard, and the cassette will start to play.

After a short time you will see the message
Loading <filename> block x
where
<filename>
is the filename of the program found and
x
is the number of the blocks.

Troubleshooting
* If you see the error “Bad command” then make sure you type in
|TAPE
.
* Try completely rewinding the cassette again and wait. It is possible that the Amstrad missed the first file.
* The cassette may not be made for the Amstrad and won't load.
* The cassette may be damaged and be unusable.
* The cassette may have been inserted on the wrong side.

For each block that is successfully read, the Amstrad will report the block number.
When all of the blocks of the file have been loaded, the program will start automatically.

If there is a error, the message
Read error a
or
Read error b
will be shown.
If this happens, you can rewind the cassette to the start of the block with the error and try again.
If you have an external cassette recorder, then you can try to adjust the volume. This may make a difference.

Loading disc software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ system
# Restart the computer.
# Insert the disc into the disc drive.
# Type
CAT
or
|DIR
and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

These commands will display a listing (directory) of the files on the disc.

Note:

The
|
symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and “@” (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

A message similar to the following will be displayed:

Drive A: user 0
DISC.BAS	1K
177K free

This is the directory of the files on the disc.
Here you will see the names of each file.
If you typed
CAT
then you will also see the size of each file.
In both cases the amount of free space is also displayed.

Note: In case of a “Read fail” error, please try the loading method using the
|CPM
command. (see the instructions below)

The directory shows the list of files on the disc.
If there is a single file, then this should be run by typing
RUN"<filename>
replacing
<filename>
with the name of the file.
(e.g.
RUN"disc.bin
)

Note: If the file has a
.BAS
,
.BIN
or
.
(3 spaces) as an extension then you can omit it.
(e.g. if the file is
DISC.BIN
you can type
RUN"disc
instead of
RUN"disc.bin
)

The disc operating system is not case sensitive, therefore you do not need to type the name exactly as shown.
(i.e.
disc.bin
is the same as
DISC.BIN
.)

If there is more than one file, look for a small file with a
.BAS
,
.BIN
or
.
extension.

Drive A: user 0
ZAPTBALL.BAS 4K ZAPTBALL.BI3 14K
ZAPTBALL.BI0 2K ZAPTBALL.BI4 11K
ZAPTBALL.BI1 13K ZAPTBALL.BI5 8K
ZAPTBALL.BI2 8K ZAPTBALL.LEV 8K
112K free
Ready

In this example, the file
ZAPTBALL.BAS
should be run.

If the computer crashes, resets or “PROGRAM LOAD FAILED” is displayed, then choose another file and try again.

Disc reading error messages
Disc missing
This message will be displayed if the disc is not inserted, or the disc is inserted and the drive belt in the disc drive has worn out and needs replacing.

Drive A: disc missing
Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

Read fail
This message will be displayed if the directory can't be read or the directory is corrupted. It is possible the disc may not have a directory. In this case try the "|CPM" loading method described below.

Drive A: read fail
Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

== Loading disc software using
|CPM
==

You should attempt to start a program on a disc using this method if there is a “Read fail” error with the
CAT
or
|DIR
commands.

# Restart the computer.
# At the “Ready” prompt, type
|CPM
and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Note: The
|
symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and “@” (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

The program loads and run!

Disc reading error messages
Read fail
Drive A: read fail
Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

If you press the “R” key, then the “read fail” message is repeated.

If you press “I” or “C” keys then the following message is displayed.

Failed to load boot sector
Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

These errors show that the command has failed and that the program can't be started using the
|CPM
command.

Failed to load boot sector
Failed to load boot sector
Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

This error shows that the command has failed and the program can't be started using the
|CPM
command.

# Type
CAT
or
|DIR
and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

|

[Picture showing directory listing from
CAT
command]
[Picture showing directory listing from
|DIR
command]

Note: In case of a “Read fail” error, please try the loading method using the
|CPM
command. (see the instructions below)

The directory shows the list of files on the disc.
If there is a single file, then this should be run by typing
RUN"<filename>
replacing
<filename>
with the name of the file.
(e.g.
RUN"disc.bin
)

[Picture showing a directory with a single file]

Note: If the file has a
.BAS
,
.BIN
or
.
(3 spaces) as an extension then you can omit it.
(e.g. if the file is
DISC.BIN
you can type
RUN"disc
instead of
RUN"disc.bin
)

The disc operating system is not case sensitive, therefore you do not need to type the name exactly as shown.
(i.e.
disc.bin
is the same as
DISC.BIN
.)

If there is more than one file, look for a small file with a
.BAS
,
.BIN
or
.
extension.

Drive A: user 0
ZAPTBALL.BAS 4K ZAPTBALL.BI3 14K
ZAPTBALL.BI0 2K ZAPTBALL.BI4 11K
ZAPTBALL.BI1 13K ZAPTBALL.BI5 8K
ZAPTBALL.BI2 8K ZAPTBALL.LEV 8K
112K free
Ready

In this example, the file
ZAPTBALL.BAS
should be run.

[Picture showing a directory with multiple files]

If the computer crashes, resets or “PROGRAM LOAD FAILED” is displayed, then choose another file and try again.

Disc reading error messages
Disc missing
This message will be displayed if the disc is not inserted, or the disc is inserted and the drive belt in the disc drive has worn out and needs replacing.

Read fail
This message will be displayed if the directory can't be read or the directory is corrupted. It is possible the disc may not have a directory. In this case try the "|CPM" loading method described below.

Drive A: read fail

== Loading disc software using
|CPM
==

If you press the “R” key, then the “read fail” message is repeated.

If you press “I” or “C” keys then the following message is displayed.

Note:
* The
|
symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and “@” (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

Loading <filename> block x
where
<filename>
is the filename of the program found and
x
is the number of the blocks.

|

This is the directory of the files on the disc.
Here you will see the names of each file.
If you typed
CAT
then you will also see the size of each file.
In both cases the amount of free space is also displayed.

[Picture showing a directory with a single file]

Note: If the file has a
.BAS
,
.BIN
or
.
(3 spaces) as an extension then you can omit it.
(e.g. if the file is
DISC.BIN
you can type
RUN"disc
instead of
RUN"disc.bin
)

Note:
* The
|
symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and “@” (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

Loading <filename> block x
where
<filename>
is the filename of the program found and
x
is the number of the blocks.

* Restart the computer. (see the instructions above for the CPC+ and CPC computers).
* Insert the disc into the disc drive.
* Type:

:CAT

or

:|DIR

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

These commands will display a listing (directory) of the files on the disc.

NOTE:

* the "|" symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and "@" (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

There are normally 3 responses to this command:

1.

Drive A: disc missing

Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

This message will be displayed if the disc is not inserted, or the disc is inserted and the drive belt in the disc drive has worn out and needs replacing.

[Picture showing 'Disc missing' error message]

2.

Drive A: read fail

Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

This message will be displayed if the directory can't be read or the directory is corrupted. It is possible the disc may not have a directory. In this case try the "|CPM" loading method described below.

[Picture showing 'Read fail' error message]

3. A message similar to the following will be displayed:

Drive A: user 0

DISC.BAS	1K

177K free

This is the directory of the files on the disc. Here you will see the names of each file. If you typed "CAT" then you will also see the size of each file. In both cases, the amount of free space is also displayed.

[Picture showing directory listing from 'CAT' command]

[Picture showing directory listing from '|DIR' command]

* If there was a "Read fail" error, please try the loading method using the "|CPM" command. (see the instructions below)
* If the directory is displayed, please continue to follow these instructions.
* The directory shows the list of files on the disc.
* If there is a single file, then this should be RUN by typing:

RUN"<filename>

replacing <filename> with the name of the file.

e.g.

RUN"disc.bin

[Picture showing a directory with a single file]

NOTES:

* If the file has a ".BAS", ".BIN" or ". " (3 spaces) as an extension then you can omit it.

e.g. if the file is "DISC.BIN" you can type:

RUN"disc

instead of:

RUN"disc.bin

* The disc operating system is not case sensitive. Therefore you do not need to type the name exactly as shown. i.e. "disc.bin" is the same as "DISC.BIN".
* If there is more than one file, look for a small file with a ".BAS", ".BIN" or ". " extension. e.g.

Drive A: user 0

ZAPTBALL.BAS 4K ZAPTBALL.BI3 14K
ZAPTBALL.BI0 2K ZAPTBALL.BI4 11K
ZAPTBALL.BI1 13K ZAPTBALL.BI5 8K
ZAPTBALL.BI2 8K ZAPTBALL.LEV 8K

112K free

Ready

In this example, the file "ZAPTBALL.BAS" should be run.

[Picture showing a directory with multiple files]

If the computer crashes, resets or "PROGRAM LOAD FAILED" is displayed, then choose another file and try again.

Loading disc software using "|CPM"
You should attempt to start a program on a disc using this method if there is a "Read fail" error with the "CAT" or "|DIR" commands.

* Restart the computer (follow the instructions above)
* At the "Ready" prompt, type:

|CPM

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

NOTE:

* the "|" symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and "@" (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.

[Picture showing '|CPM' command]

# The screen will clear. There are 3 possible results:

1.

Drive A: read fail

Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

If you press the "R" key, then the "read fail" message is repeated. If you press "I" or "C" keys then the following message is displayed.

Failed to load boot sector

[Picture showing 'Read fail' error after '|CPM' command has been executed]

These errors show that the command has failed and that the program can't be started using the "|CPM" command.

RUN"<filename>

replacing <filename> with the name of the file.

e.g.

RUN"disc.bin
A guide to running software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ computer

Restarting a Amstrad CPC+ to load cassette or disc software
If you are using a CPC464+:

# Switch the computer off.
# Insert the system cartridge (which contains the game “Burnin' Rubber” and “Locomotive BASIC”).
# Switch on the computer.
A menu will then be displayed with two options “f1 Amstrad BASIC” and “f2 Burnin Rubber”.

# Press f1 to select “Amstrad BASIC”.
# The screen will clear and then display:

BASIC 1.1
Ready

You can now follow the instructions to use the cassette or disc software.

Restarting a Amstrad CPC to load cassette or disc software
If you are using a CPC464, CPC664, CPC472 or CPC6128:
* Switch off the computer and switch it on again.
The computer will show the startup message and there will be a “Ready” prompt.

You can now follow the instructions to use cassette or disc software.

Loading cassette software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ system
* Restart the computer. (see the instructions above for the CPC+ and CPC computers).
* Insert the cassette into the cassette player.

(On a CPC464 or CPC464+ system you must insert the cassette into the internal cassette player.)

* If you are using a CPC with a disc interface you will need to type:

:|TAPE

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

NOTE:

* the "|" symbol can be obtained by pressing SHIFT and "@" (at) together on the Amstrad keyboard.
* The CPC664, CPC6128 and CPC6128+ have a disc interface built in, and this command must be used to enter cassette mode.
* The CPC464 and CPC464+ have a cassette player built in. If you have a disc interface (Amstrad/Schneider DDI-1 or Vortex) connected you will need to type this command to enter cassette mode. If you do not have a disc interface, you do not need to type this command.
* Now type:

:RUN"

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Tips:

* On a CPC464 system you can press SHIFT and the small ENTER key (on the keypad) together instead of typing RUN".
* On a CPC464+, CPC6128, or CPC6128+ system you can press SHIFT and ENTER together instead of typing RUN".
* The following message will be displayed:

:Press PLAY then any key:

[Picture shows the commands to load from cassette on a CPC with a disc interface]

[Picture shows commands to load from cassette on a CPC without a disc interface]

* Now press the PLAY button on the cassette player
* Now press any key on the Amstrad keyboard, and the cassette will start to play.
* After a short time you will see the following message:

Loading <filename> block x

where "<filename>" is the filename of the program found and "x" is the number of the block.

If you do not see this message:

* If you see the error "Bad command" then make sure you type in "|TAPE".
* try rewind the cassette to the start again and waiting. It is possible the Amstrad missed the first file.

* the cassette is not made for the Amstrad and will not load
* the cassette is damaged and it is not possible to run the program on it.
* the wrong side of the cassette has been inserted

For each block that is successfully read, the Amstrad will report the block number.

When all of the blocks of the file have been loaded, the program will start automatically.

If there is a error, a message will be displayed:

:Read error a

or

:Read error b

will be shown.

If this happens, you can rewind the cassette to the start of the block with the error and try again.

If you have a external cassette recorder, then you can try to adjust the volume, this may make a difference.

The computer will show the startup message and there will be a "Ready" prompt.

* You can now follow the instructions to use cassette or disc software

* Now type:

:RUN"

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Loading disc software on a real Amstrad CPC/CPC+ system
* Restart the computer. (see the instructions above for the CPC+ and CPC computers).
* Insert the disc into the disc drive.
* Type:

:CAT

or

:|DIR

and then press the large ENTER key (CPC464) or RETURN key (CPC6128, CPC464+,CPC6128+).

Retry, Ignore or Cancel?

[Picture showing 'Read fail' error after '|CPM' command has been executed]

These errors show that the command has failed and that the program can't be started using the "|CPM" command.

2.
